TOKYO GHOUL FOLLOWS ...

...the story of ken kaneki an average college student after a traumatic encounter turns him into a half ghoul

ghouls are beings that look, talk, and behave just like humans do, but they can only survive by feeding on humans

ghouls posses natural defense body parts that are called kagunes and depending on the placement of their kagunes when released they can have varying shapes and abilities

ghouls are most known for their black and red eyes, that only become visible when they are hungry, angry, or threatening others

kaneki, new to the ghoul world, and trapped between his human conscience and ghoul body must survive turf wars, fend off his hunger, and try to live a normal life while being hunted by the ccg (commission of counter ghoul) otherwise known as
ghoul exterminators

aside from enhanced strength...

...kagunes are the main advantage ghouls have over humans, they are appendages able to form and disapear at will from what is known as rc cells, these cells are only found in ghoul bodies and when released they take on different forms depending on where the rc cell sack is placed within the ghoul body, you can find a more detailed explanation of these defense organs here
but below are the various types of kagunes and a simple explanation

In the chart the hierarchy of what kagune has a higher chance of beating another is shown to be as following;

ukaku trumps bikaku
kokaku trumps ukaku
rinkaku trumps kokaku
and bikaku trumps rinkaku

image description: a chart of a ghouls back, with labels in order from the neck to the tail bone, the lower neck is labeled “ukaku”, the shoulder blade is labeled ”kokaku”, the waist is labeled ”rinkaku” and the tailbone is labeled ”bikaku”

ukaku kagunes often look like feathers or are very loose in build, they spread from the shoulder area and ghouls with this type are better at high speed attacks but often run out of stamina quickly

kokaku kagunes are often solid and dense, they are perfect for shielding and cutting but because of their density they are heavy and can be difficult to wield

rinkaku kagunes usually look like tentacles and can have multiple appendages, they form around the waist and are flexible while still being slightly dense these kagunes are usually the best for all types of fights but because of their stretchy and flexible nature they can do poorly against heavier kagunes like kokakus

bikaku kagunes erupt from the tailbone and often look like tails, while being a slightly more sturdier version of rinkaku kagunes, because of their length and placement and usual display of only have one appendage they can do poorly agaisnt ukakus

However this chart is not absolute, this is simply based on the pros and cons of certain kagunes, a ghouls diet and how they maintain their body as well as were they live play a major role in whether or not they can do well in fights

some ghouls are naturally weaker than others and because of this they avoid fights and hunting for food entirely, in the hierarchy and wards portion of this carrd you will be able to learn more about this

FOR THE LOVE
OF GOD ...

... please read the manga, watching the anime is easier however the anime changes plot points, leaves out important scenes and overall isn’t as good compared to the manga

I highly recommend reading chapter one and then watching episode one of the first season if you still want to see the anime, the ost is to die for and if you simply want to see certain scenes animated this is your best bet

if you want to read the manga for free you can do it here and the anime can be found for free on most bootleg sites

SPOILER MENTIONS FOR :RE

tokyo ghoul :re is the second installment of tokyo ghoul, it follows ken kaneki with memory loss after the tragic ending of the first installment, now going by haise sasaki, he now is forced to work at the ccg as a ghoul exterminator and leader of the quinx squad, an experimental new sanction of the ccg that implants ghoul kagunes, specifically rc cells into humans to make them better at battle against ghouls

in :re haise struggles to regain his memory and return to his life, friends, and family

personally i donot reccomend :re for a plethora of reasons,
namely the transphobia in the sequel toward the character mutsuki in the quinx squad is introduced as a trans man but not treated as one despite binding, not wanting to be called a woman / she and making a clear point of being a man, there is also transmisogyny towards big madam a ghoul apart of the ghoul restaurant, a trans woman who is misgendered after her death

additionally the plot gets pushed in a more action and shounen area in effort to keep up with the popularity of the original series, plot points and characters are introduced and dropped randomly

the only reason i’d say for anyone to read :re is if they like the improved art style or simply want to see what the sequel brings, otherwise it is entirely up to you to continue with :re, the anime is not worth it at all in my opinion as the animation quality is even worse compared to the first installments two seasons

all in all you would be better off skimming :re or simply reading the wikipedia summary if you wanted more story
